This Friday is Jim Schoenecker and Chris Rosenau of Collections of Colonies of Bees, club DJ Fortune, and Marclay himself. Reception from 5:30-7:00, performance from 7-9pm. Then on Thursday, November 15th, Mad Hatter of The Rusty P's and WMSE's own Paul Host take a turn. The last installment is on Thursday, December 22nd, which features DJ White Bread and Doormouse! >> WMSE's 2005 Fall Membership Drive was a great success, as we raised $115,000 in generous pledges from our listeners to meet our operating budget for the next six months. We were very proud to unveil Live at WMSE Volume 6, a compilation disc of some of the best blues, country, and roots music recorded recently live on the WMSE airwaves. In the vein of our very popular Volume 1 disc, our new comp features some great Milwaukee-area talent side-by-side with touring artists who have been kind enough to stop by and perform for our listeners. You can still pick it up for a $20 donation to WMSE by clicking here. You'll own some great music that hasn't been available since their original airdatae, including songs by Monte Montgomery, Rev Raven & his Chain Smoking Altar Boys, Jim Liban, Steve Cohen Blues?Band, Chris Duarte, Mississippi Cactus, The Groove Hogs, Alex Wilson, Andrew Gelles, Billy Flynn Trio, Matt Hendricks, Dark Horse Project, Willy Porter, Wild Rice, and Jon Langford with Sally Timms. Thank you to everyone who pledged! We hope you enjoyed a great week of live programming with twenty artists performing in the studio to help our cause.

>> We're busy preparing for WMSE's Fall Membership Drive, kicking off at 9am on Friday, November 4th. This year, expect the same great programming as always, with more than twenty live artists performing on the air throughout the week from a variety of genres. Keep checking in for updates. So far we have some great local and regional artists, and are working to bring in some touring acts once again. Check out the "Tune In" page of this site for the updated lineup!
>> Of course, many of Milwaukee's musicians have talents which extend beyond songwriting, so we invited members of two local bands to use their design skills to create new WMSE t-shirts for our Fall Membership Drive (November 4-11). Our friends Faythe Levine of Wooden Robot, and Sam Macon of Sincebyman, have responded with two beautiful and unique looks for our new line of WMSE merchandise, and we're very excited to unveil those designs later this month. Sam and Faythe are great people in two fantastic Milwaukee bands, and we encourage you to check them out (and to visit Faythe's store, Paper Boat in Bay View).

>> WMSE 91.7FM will now be known as "The Hug". Please note that there will be no format change.
>> WMSE is very proud to be a sponsor of a special event at the Milwaukee Art Museum on Friday, August 26th. "It's All Wrong, Right?", an evening of experimental and innovative music and film, will feature performances by Def Harmonic, Collections of Colonies of Bees, Mildew, and Paul Amitai, as well as experimental films by Amitai, Tate Bunker, and Anne Killelea. DJ's Joe Blow and JDL will spin throughout the evening, and the $25 admission includes an open bar and heavy appetizers. This is a fundraiser for the Milwaukee Art Museum, and is being organized in conjunction with the spectacular CUT/Film as Found Object exhibition, which runs now through September 11th. The station was very proud to help in organizing the "It's All Wrong, Right?" event on August 26th.
>> On Thursday, August 11th, don't miss a special night of music and art at the Milwaukee Ale House. WMSE and the Eisner Museum will be co-presenting AD-JAM, a fundraiser to benefit each of our non-profit organizations. Stop on by the Ale House at 233 N Water Street, between 8pm and close for live music from Alex Wilson, Andrew Gelles, and The Nelsonics, and take a look at the Eisner's new exhibit, which features show posters, flyers, and CD cover art designed for Milwaukee-area musicians. Admission is just $7, and only $1 if you are already a member of the Eisner Museum, or if you show your valid WMSE Club Card. If you are not enrolled in either of these programs, you may sign up for both right there for $35 (a $60 value!). Visit wmse.org, or eisnermuseum.org for more information.
>> Due to technical difficulties, the Far Corner performance for August 2nd was rescheduled for August 23rd. We apologize for the inconvenience, and thank the band for their willingness to reschedule.

>> Thanks to Robin Mindt and M Magazine for a great write-up in their new August 2005 issue about the MSE Project.
>> Many thanks to Geraud Blanks, Manager Extraordinaire of Black Elephant, for sharing some of his hard-earned advice for bands and other aspiring managers on our Resources page. He's one of the best in the city, and we very much appreciate him taking the time to share his experiences with our listeners and readers. Black Elephant will be releasing a new mixtape, Burn This Album, at their shows at B-Side on Friday, July 15th, and Onopa on July 16th.
>> Tuesdays in July were completely booked even before the month began, and we're happy to welcome a pretty eclectic group onto our airwaves. First up is The Flying Party, a group of prolific young Milwaukeeans who are part of the Hi-Five collective of artists who operate the Corn Club in Riverwest, and record at their home studio. In the coming weeks, you'll here Clementine, another pop/rock band with seven members who are gaining popularity with each new show. More established acts, Dr Chow's Love Medicine and The Etiquette, will round out the month of Local/Live programming, and you can catch them both at the Brady Street Artisan Food Festival on Sunday, July 31st.

>> WMSE is very pleased to announce that the Milwaukee Arts Board has approved our 2005 Milwaukee Sound Environment Project grant application, which ensures that this resource, and the Tuesday night Local/Live program will continue for at least another year. The success of the MSE Project has been irrefutable thus far, and we look forward to building on the foundation laid in its first year. Thanks to all of you who have greeted our new endeavor with excitement, and who have offered your time, talents, and experiences to make the Project what it is. And thanks to the Milwaukee Arts Board, who sees continued merit in our mission to present Milwaukee-made music to our discerning listeners.

>> We'll have a special edition of Local/Live on Tuesday, May 24th at 8:00pm. Tune in to hear some of the best performances from our archives of more than 200 bands who have recorded live on WMSE. Our Recording Engineer is taking a well-deserved week off after we welcomed twenty bands into the studio during the week of the Membership Drive, but we'll be back next week with another great Milwaukee area band live on the air!
>> We've posted mp3's of two tracks from Loud Enough to Get Your Sound: The Danger's "I Wanna Know Why", and Michelle Anthony's "Ivy Rider". Enjoy!
>> Live from WMSE Volume 5: Loud Enough to Get Your Sound was released during the Spring Membership Drive as a pledge incentive to our listeners. The new volume collects fourteen of the best tracks from local and national acts who recently performed live at the station, and provides a mix of genres to ensure that there's something on there for everyone. Thanks to all of the bands who donated a track to this compilation, which helps to raise money for WMSE. Click on the Live CDs page for a complete track listing.
>> Thank you to everyone who pledged their support during our Spring Membership Drive, May 6-13, to keep Frontier Radio alive in Milwaukee for another six months. With your generous donations, WMSE raised over $115,000 to meet our operating budget into November. A special thanks to the twenty bands who performed live to make the week special for our staff and listeners.

>> Congratulations to WLUM 102.1FM in Milwaukee for winning the 2004 WAMI Award for Best Radio Station in the state.
>> April is another busy month at WMSE, as we gear up for our Spring Membership Drive (May 6 - 13). Local/Live is booked into May already, so tune in for performances from The Championship (April 5), which features members of The Vega Star; The Silence (April 12, pictured), who have some brand new material; Burbank Cartel (April 19), featuring former members of Alligator Gun; and Vera Deirdre (April 26), who will be performing songs from their brand new album being released on April 29th (some of which were recorded by WMSE's Recording Engineer and Producer, Billy Cicerelli). Wobblyhead Records' Magic Arrows will perform on May 3rd, and then - as always - we'll welcome more than twenty local and national bands onto the airwaves during the Membership Drive.
>> Thanks to everyone who came out to the Rockabilly Chili Contest on Sunday, April 3rd. We doubled last year's attendance at Lakefront Brewery, as 745 people passed through the door to taste chili from 27 area restaurants. Congratulations to Q Real American Food in Bay View, the people's choice for Best Meat Chili, and to Anodyne Coffee on Brady Street, who took home the award for Best Vegetarian Chili. Thanks to all of the restaurants who generously shared their food to make this a successful event, helping WMSE get a head start on this Spring's Membership Drive.
March '05
>> Every month, you'll be able to find a good number of new albums by Milwaukee bands in your finer independent record shops. But this March alone, you can pick up new releases from three local bands - Decibully, El Oso, and Temper Temper - on three national labels: Polyvinyl, Contraphonic, and Revelation. Temper Temper played their sold-out CD release party at Mad Planet on Saturday, March 26th. An all-ages show with Since By Man, Red Knife Lottery, and Call Me Lightning (feel better, Paris Texas!) got started at 5:00pm, and a 21+ set with Minus After and Wolfbite closed out the night.
>>Thursday, March 17th marked the 24th Annivesary of WMSE, and to thank our listeners for making that possible, we gave away WMSE gear every hour on the hour for twenty-four hours. So thanks to those who stayed tuned all day and won t-shirts, caps, sweatshirts, Live at WMSE CD's, and much more. On Tuesday, Reilly got us ready for the St Patrick's Day anniversary celebration with a live performance. Thanks to everyone, for helping us present another great year of commercial-free music to Milwaukee!
>>OnMilwaukee.com's Music Editor, Bobby Tanzilo, was kind enough to contribute some frank advice to our Resources page for musicians planning on sending press kits to the media. Thanks to Bobby for helping us out, since we received a number of requests for advice in this area. If you have any questions about making music, just email Brent Gohde, and he'll do his best to find someone to offer up what they know.
>>Three editions of our new "Local/Live" program are now in the books, and we were thrilled to welcome Decibully in to the studio this past Tuesday to co-incide with the release of their new album, Sing Out America! (Polyvinyl Records), which hits stores around the country on March 8th. Ryan and Kenny returned to the station on Thursday to spin some of their favorite music on Thursday afternoon during Dori's show. On February 22nd, Red Knife Lottery (pictured) made their WMSE debut, performing songs from their forthcoming EP on Uprising Records, So Much Drama. Pictures from that set - and from Willy Porter's - can now be seen on the Images page of this site's "Behind The Scenes" section.
February '05
>>Many thanks to all of our friends who came to Onopa Brewing Company on Saturday, February 26th, to help celebrate Vital Source's 3rd Anniversary. Those of you who stopped by got to see some fantastic live sets by four as-yet unsigned Milwaukee-area bands, The Panic, The Danger, Chariots Race, and The Reverse. All of the artists and DJ's (WMSE's own Haven and Bts.Wrkng) donated their time and exceptional talents to the evening's festivities, and Vital Source gave WMSE all proceeds from the door for the third straight year. Thank you to everyone who made the evening a success!
>>Thanks to Milwaukee's photographer-to-the-stars, Deone Jahnke, for offering her expert advice to the Resources section of our site. For musicians who want information about what they can expect to pay, what makes for a good photograph,
clichés to avoid, reproduction rights, and much more, this is a great place to start learning.

>>On Tuesday, February 15th at 7:00pm, WMSE launched "MSE Project Presents: Local/Live", a weekly show featuring a live performance by a different Milwaukee-area artist. We were thrilled to welcome Willy Porter (pictured) into our studios for the first installment of this new program. Midnight Radio with Bob Midnight and Radio Dave will continue every Tuesday from 6:00-9:00pm, with the added element of "Local/Live", which will air at 8:00pm every week.
We've had an overwhelming response from Milwaukee bands eager to perform during this slot, but you are welcome to email our Promotions Director, Brent Gohde, if you want to throw your hat into the ring.
>>Thanks to everyone who came out to celebrate this exciting new show at our kick-off party at Shank Hall on Thursday, February 10th, which featured Blues Drive-listener favorite, The Groove Hogs, and very special guests Paul Cebar and Stacks Edward Band. We hope you all had as great a time as we did! Thanks especially to the artists who performed for helping us start our new endeavor in style.
January '05
>>Mp3's of live performances are now posted throughout the site, centrally located here. We've got performances from each of our live discs, and we will continue to put up new extra-special not-heard-since-their-original-airing files, so keep checking in. Also, some more local music industry types have chimed in for the resources section. Many thanks to Ryan Weber of Decibully and New Sense, and Jim Hanke of El Oso for sharing some of their hard-learned life lessons.
>>Beginning on Tuesday, February 15th, WMSE will present a weekly live local music show during Bob & Dave's Midnight Radio show, from 7-8pm. Expect to hear a lot of music new to many of our listeners, as well as sets by local DJ's, and a few surprises. We'll kick it off with a party at Shank Hall on February 10th. More information will be posted here as it becomes available, so please continue to tune in to WMSE 91.7FM for programming updates, and to mseproject.org for a list of artists scheduled to perform.
>>Thanks to all of our listeners and supporters for a great 2004 here at WMSE. We had many memborable moments, too many to recount here. But we'll give you some numbers so you have an idea of how busy we've been: Since the Milwaukee Sound Environment Project was conceived in early March of this past year, WMSE welcomed 185 bands and musicians into the studio for an interview or live performance, some more than once. Of those artists, 143 were from the Milwaukee area. Additionally, by our count, we interviewed 48 community organizations (mostly non-profits and/or performance companies) and individual artists (visual artists, filmmakers, dancers, etc.) live on the air over the course of those nine months. We'll keep this going in 2005, so please stay tuned!
>>WMSE congratulates Monday 6-9am host Rich Mars on a long-running, successful radio program, and thanks him for all of his time and energy in helping our listeners start their weeks off right. Rich broadcast his last regular show this past Monday, January 3rd. We are pleased to announce that longtime substitute DJ and WMSE Steering Committee member Grant Killoran will be taking over Rich's old time-slot. Grant is an experienced college radio DJ, having worked at stations in Minneapolis/St Paul (where he was Station Manager and Music Director) and Green Bay during the 1980's. He currently resides on Milwaukee's East Side. Rich Mars was a staple of Monday mornings for six years, and we'll miss his wit and excellent taste in music. Expect to hear him on WMSE in the future as he fills in on shows such as Midnight Radio and Alternative Farm Rock. For more information on Rich, read an article by OnMilwaukee.com's Molly Snyder Edler here.
